Who Will it Be?

Posted by Alex On March - 30 - 2009

If you haven’t noticed them already, the mock draft fanatics are slowly making their way to a city near you. Who is it going to be? Luckily, Rail Bird Central has it covered.

In his column this morning, Brian breaks down the percentages of each player that has been mentioned as a possibility for the Packers in the first round.

According to Brian:

“Florida State linebacker Everette Brown – 30% – Right now Brown is the odds on favorite to be drafted by the Packers. He’s a good fit for the 3-4 defense, he fills a need, and he’s most likely going to be available.

Texas linebacker Brian Orakpo – 25% – Orakpo is slightly behind Brown in overall athleticism and upside. He can certainly rush the quarterback, but can he do other things required of a 3-4 linebacker?

Boston College defensive tackle B.J. Raji – 15% – I think the Packers will take Raji if he’s available. The problem is, I don’t think he’ll be available. Fans can only hope he slips to the Pack at number nine.”

I personally hope we never see another Florida State player in Green Bay, but for the most part I think the rest of his list is a pretty fair assessment.

I was surprised that Aaron Maybin got little to no mention outside of a slight chance in the field. And yes, Malcolm Jenkins is a terrible, let me repeat, terrible, choice.

Michael Crabtree huh? Would make for an interesting first day.

  1. Asshalo Said,

My guess is we go with a surprise pick becuase for whatever reason that’s how thompson roles (AJ HAWK may be an expception). Everyone seems to think it’s going to be one of the four mentioned. But you have to remember Thompson picks who he believes in the best player available– regardless of need. I think you’re also ruling out the possibility of an offensive lineman or a CB like Malcom Jenkins.

I do know TT was very impressed with Orakpo at Texas pro day. So really, nothing will surprise me– expect a receiver. Then I may have to start a fire thompson in order to give the arguement some credit.

  2. Andyman Said,

I think my pick at this point in Orakpo, but like Asshalo said – TT doesn’t go for the obvious pick very often.

forgot to say Tyson Jackson (DE) out of LSU is perfect for the 3-4 (6″5 and 295)

  5. Graham Said,

    All you TT haters. Amazing.

    Let’s look at TT’s 1st and 2nd round picks:

    2005
    1. Aaron Rodgers (a success)
    2. Nick Collins (a success)
    2. Terrence Murphy (career ending Injury)

    2006
    1. A.J. Hawk (a success)
    2. Daryn Colledge (a moderate success he DOES start most the time)
    2. Gregg Jennings (a success)

    2007
    1. Justin Harrell (a real bust so far…)
    2. Brandon Jackson (a success he has filled the role asked of him)

2008 (to early to really tell)
    1. None
    2. Jordy Nelson (a success)
    2. Brian Brohm (not a success but I would not call it a bust yet)
    2. Pat Lee (still to early)

So TT’s WORST draft pics were Harrell a walking injury, Terrence Murphy who was done before he started, and Daryn Colledge a starter most of the time. That is not bad in my mind.

No one but elmo is hating on TT. No one argues his drafts have not been ok.

Too early to evaluate Jackson, and Hawk.

I would consider Colledge more of a success than Hawk and Nick Collins being a success is extremely debatable.
