Bet Against Favre

Posted by Alex On October - 27 - 2009

If you ask a Vikings fan, the Favre led purple is destined to claim the Lombardi trophy this season. If you ask me, the wise money bets against Favre this weekend. Why? I’ll let history speak for itself.

We can argue all day about Favre’s late game heroics. Many say he has led comebacks over 43 times in his career. I personally only count 22 real comebacks, but what I don’t see in that stat line are the monumental collapses in all the big games in-between. If history remains consistent there is no reason to believe Favre can get it done in a game with the magnitude he will face this weekend at Lambeau.

Former NFL great Fran Tarkenton said it best stating, “Favre has made more stupid plays than any great quarterback I have ever seen.”  Is Frank right? Let’s take a look back at the track record.

The Choke List

2008 Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets

Brett Favre kills the Jets hopes of making the playoffs by tossing three interceptions and being outplayed by the guy he replaced Chad Pennington.

1999 Regular Season vs. Minnesota

Both teams enter the game at 7-6 with the loser likely out of the playoffs. Down by four with 9:00 minutes left on the clock, Brett throws two interceptions in the final drives of the game sending the Packers to defeat and eventually not making the playoffs.

1995 NFC Championship game vs. Dallas

Packers are down 31-27 with a chance to win it in the fourth quarter. After previously throwing a pick to Leon Lett, Favre goes gunslinger in the fourth quarter, scrambles out of the pocket, and throws an interception to seal the game for the Cowboys.

Super Bowl XXXII vs. Denver

Packers have a chance late to drive eighties yards and take home to trophy. Favre manages to drive into Bronco territory only to go four and out and leaving John Elway with one final ring.

2002 Wild Card vs. Atlanta

Not much to say about this one. The Packers go down early and Favre cannot bring them back. He throws multiple interceptions and doesn’t do a thing to get the Packers back in the game.

2004 NFC Wildcard vs. Minnesota

I’ll keep this one simple. Daunte Culpepper four touchdowns, Brett Favre four interceptions.

2001 NFC Divisonal Playoffs vs. Rams

Perhaps the single worst performance by Favre in his career. Favre gives the Rams a gift by throwing 6 interceptions. Three of those picks are returned for touchdowns.

2003 NFC Divionsal Playoffs vs. Philadelphia

Another overtime meltdown for Favre. It only took one play as Brett threw away the game with an interception to Brian Dawkins. I could swear that Favre was throwing right at him.

2007 NFC Championship vs. New York

This one still gets me and probably cost Favre his job in Green Bay. No need to re-live this one folks. With about three guys wide open, on the second play in overtime Favre tosses the ball to Corey Webster setting up the winning Giants field goal.

Now I realize that the NFL betting odds seem to think history is not going to repeat itself again. However, if you are a Packer fan you know the smart money rides on a monumental collapse for the Vikings. This may be a regular season game, but it has all the hoopla that any of Favre’s big games ever had.

You can lay your money on Favre this weekend if you wish, but remember it’s all just history repeating. Where is my money going? It’s going to be used for sports betting at BetUS.com.  I say bet the house on the Packers, the past rarely lies.

You don’t get it, do you Alex?

Those were not Favre’s fault! It was because of his teammates!!! If Favre wasn’t there, they those losses would’ve happened anyway!

Now, on those miracle, only-Favre-could-fo-it throws, then it’s all on him. Because let’s face it, wasn’t him in there, those teams would never have won!

Favre ressurected the Green Bay Packers ALL BY HIMSELF from the darkness of the 70s and 80s, and that’s how fans repay him? By showing moments that his teammates let him down? Goddammit Favre had to put up with so much during his tenure in Green Bay… And he still has the passion to play it for the love of the game. A True American Hero!!!

  3. Asshalo Said,

I agree with all of these and this is primarily why I was so pissed when he had a career game about a month ago. After choking so many times in big games, he actually came through… it’s just it wasn’t for us. I do have problems with these ones tho…

As much as I hate Favre now, I refuse to pin SB32 on him. That’s onHolmgren. With Denver rushing as well as they were, it was asinine to continue to go in 5 WR sets.

I blame Favre for OT against Phili in 2003, but we probably shouldn’t have got there with a 4th and 26th. You can probably pin some of that on luck.

In the NFC championship game in 2007, I again blame OT on him. BUT, Ryan Grant and the O line managed 29 yards on 15 carries, while the Giants were well over 200 yards. We got killed in the trenches, so given the circumstances, I thought he played decent in regular time. OT however: http://archive.profootballtalk.com/FavreThrow.jpg
I guess Ryan Grant in the check-down made far to much sense.

  4. Greg C. Said,

That is quite a list, and the only one I disagree with is Super Bowl 32. I thought he played very well in that game.

I dismissed the “fourth quarter comeback” stat somewhere around 2001, when I found out that Favre was credited with a “fourth quarter comeback” when Allen Rossum returned a punt for a TD to win a game.

That was also around the time that I began to lose confidence in Favre’s ability to finish a season strong, especially in the playoffs. At times he looked almost like he wanted to just pack it in and go play golf. And with all of his statements about how he wondered if he was too old to be playing anymore, this was not the guy I wanted in the trenches, leading my team in the playoffs.

By the way, it’s Fran Tarkenton, not Frank.

Spoken like a true ignorant, bitter, hillybilly Packerfan with his thumb up his a** and his head in the sand…

Wah..wahh..wah…it’s all Brett’s fault. What are you going to say now, when Tee Tee and Erin can’t deliver, eh?

It was ONLY Brett Favre out there, right jackass? He was the ONLY one playing those games that day, right? He was handicapped by a typical GB Packer shit team and Mike Sherman, right?

You blind homers crack me up..

Can’t wait to see Tee Tee and Erin go down in flames…..

    Yeah!

In the Eagles playoff loss after the 4th and 29. It looked like Brian Dawkins was fielding a punt return on that INT thrown by Favre. I really wanted him gone after that.

    Jeremiah's Johnson Reply:

    Yeah…

FAvre should have really defended that 4th and 26 play…What’s the matter with him anyway?

Don’t we all know that Favre played DEFENSE his whole career…or is it just the blame FAVRE first and for everything crowed that has their brains scrambled from too many trips to the still…?

  9. Jeremiah's Johnson Said,

Well then, cousin Ezra..you’re a jackass, if you wanted that..

First off, there was an eagle in Favre’s face who threw off the trajectory of the ball.
Secondly, JW was supposed to break to the middle, but made the wrong read…

I’d blame Sherman for losing that game over anyone…

But the typical hypocrite Packer fan has to blame Favre..Favre..Favre..all the time and for everything…My crops didn’t grow? It was that G_D Favre’s fault!

My wife’s cheatin’ on me..??? Damn Favre rot in HELL!!!

Alright I’ll give you alot of the meltdowns no doubt. Put to put those 6 pics on favre in the St. Louis game is not fair. Did you watch the game?? 4 count them four drops for interceptions in that game, sure Favre contributed BUT that was a team loss through and through!!!

P.S. Favre had his LAST chance to get it done in 2007. He didn’t which is why we moved on. Favre is not better or younger this year. His team might be, but he is not and I’ll stand by that was Favre’s last chance untill he prooves me wrong in the PLAYOFFS!!
